Mayor Joe Fontana and Trustee Matt Reid to Join Lorne Ave Kids for International Walk to School Day, Wednesday, Oct. 9

Lorne Avenue Public School pupils in London’s Old East Village will join schoolchildren from around the world to celebrate International Walk to School Day on Wednesday, October 9, and they’ll have some local dignitaries to keep them company.

London Mayor Joe Fontana and new school board trustee Matt Reid will join Lorne Ave pupils at 8:30am outside the Boyle Memorial Community Centre (530 Charlotte St at Lorne Ave) for the 25-minute walk to school.

As it happens, “Walking Wednesdays” are a regular feature of the Lorne Ave community, which hosts three walking school buses every Wednesday morning. Kids, parents and community volunteers meet at Boyle, Mykonos Restaurant (Adelaide/Elias), and Tony’s Pizza (Dundas/Quebec) and set off for school, picking up more walkers along the winding routes and converging on the school shortly before 9am. The famously “walkable” neighbourhood also boasts a walking school bus on Fridays to Lord Roberts French Immersion where many Old East pupils attend school.

As a member of the Old East Village Economic Development Advisory Group, Mayor Fontana has spoken in favour of keeping Lorne Ave PS open as a school.

Matt Reid was recently appointed trustee of Wards 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 by the Thames Valley District School Board to fill the seat vacated by newly elected MPP Peggy Satler. Lorne Ave PS and the Old East Village are located in Ward 4.

International Walk to School Day is celebrated by children and adults in 40 countries around the world and promotes safe routes for walking and bicycling; increasing physical activity for children; and concern for the environment. The events build connections between families, schools and the broader community.

The Lorne Ave Walking School Bus is part of the London Block Parents Program’s BlockWalk Program, in partnership with Active and Safe Routes to School. It is supported by the London InterCommunity Health Centre, and it is one of a number of community programs centered on Lorne Ave PS, the last remaining non-specialized elementary school in London’s core.
