Adelaide Underpass Project Update

The city has provided us with the update below:

Project Update It’s been a busy two months since we first broke ground on the Adelaide Underpass project. To those of you who live or work near the area, we thank you for your continued patience and understanding as we complete this important work.

So far, much of the construction activity has been focused on the blocks of Central Avenue between William Street and Elizabeth Street, where crews have been installing new underground infrastructure.

Crews have also been working in the west end of McMahen Park parallel to Adelaide Street to build a temporary road that will eventually be used to bypass northbound and southbound traffic around upcoming work planned for the roadway on Adelaide Street. The transition of traffic over to the temporary bypass road is tentatively scheduled for September.

Temporary closure of Adelaide Street
Now that the underground work on Central Avenue has sufficiently progressed, it’s time to install utilities across Adelaide Street through the intersection of Adelaide Street and Central Avenue.

This is a complex undertaking that requires coordination with multiple partners including CP Rail, who will also be using this opportunity to complete required work on their infrastructure crossing Adelaide Street.

To complete this work in the most efficient manner, Adelaide Street North is scheduled to be closed to all traffic between Central Avenue and just north of McMahen Street, beginning July 9, for approximately nine days. Work hours during this period will be 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. each day and will include weekends.

With access to Adelaide Street restricted at McMahen Street during this closure, local residents will need to use Wolsley Avenue, Piccadilly Street or Elizabeth Street instead to enter or leave the neighbourhood.

Additional traffic calming measures were added to surrounding neighbourhoods at the beginning of this project to prepare for changes in traffic associated with construction impacts. The project team will continue to monitor conditions and make adjustments where possible.

Access to all businesses is being maintained, and navigational signage will be in place to assist visitors to the area.

A public service announcement with full details on the closure will be issued ahead of the closure to advise the public of traffic impacts and encourage commuters to avoid the area.

What’s next
This week crews will be doing preparatory work on Adelaide Street that requires shifting lane restrictions, starting with work in the east half of the Adelaide Street this week, and moving to the west side of the road next week. One lane of northbound and southbound traffic will be maintained throughout this period. These restrictions came into effect today and will be in place until the full closure is expected to begin, on July 9.

Our team will be here for you every step of the way as this important work is underway. If you have any questions or concerns related to the construction work, please send them our way so we can work through a solution together.
